OUR MISSION
Klinkman Solar Design (KSD) is an innovation partnership formed with the mission of bringing forth some of the many inventions of Paul Klinkman (see bio details under "about us / our people") and offering them to a world hungry for clean, effective & affordable energy, local, year-round gardening & farming, and much more. You need to know up front that you won't find any better source of solar inventions anywhere. Vast numbers of regional jobs can be created and the entire fossil fuel industry will eventually be flattened. Each solar improvment lowers the cost of renewable energy. Every time that the cost of renewable energy is lowered, an oil field goes undrilled or a gas well goes unfracked. It's a virtual certainty that small groups of individuals or one single community can lower the costs of renewables. The only questions are who, when and can you participate.

We're focusing 5x normal sunlight through our windows. We put extra sun on the tomatoes and we lose very little heat at night. Nobody else on earth can do this!

OUR UNIQUE KSD SOLAR GREENHOUSE DESIGN PACKAGE FOR FARMERS, FOR BUILDERS AND FOR SCHOOLS OR COMMUNITY GROUPS – IS READY!

**Farmers can build the greenhouse themselves with our assistance; provide local food in winter, and save thousands of dollars in construction – and in heating costs. Later, opportunities will arise for independent contractors to become licensed to serve as consultants to farmers, or build units for others. Most recently, we are offering schools and community groups similar options to build and use the greenhouse – for curriculum and/or food production.

KSD CONCENTRATING SOLAR/HEAT RETAINING GREENHOUSE:

Our greenhouse conserves heat cost-efficiently. We don't use plastic sheeting or expensive fiberglass plastic walls. It transfers heat into rock storage extremely well and it carefully increases the amount of sunlight reaching plants in winter. You won't find anything remotely as sustainable, as cost-efficient and as robust on the web.

Our concentrating solar greenhouse is the best greenhouse design on earth no contest whatsoever -- no fuel even in January because of its great solar heat conservation, stronger winter sun when desired, evenly distributed sunlight on the plants, lower crop insurance risk because heavy snow won't collapse the structure, true sustainability & unbeatable total lifetime costs (Patent #8408199). It turns any greenhouse conversation on its head with questions such as:
–If I add more mirrors, can I double my crop production inside?

If the greenhouse naturally keeps low humidity, will I do away with the expense of electric fans?
–Can I get through the entire winter without burning any gas or wood? Did I overinsulate?
–If my house is cold and my greenhouse is warm, why don’t I move to the greenhouse?

Can I put solar panels on the south facing roof and in front of the south wall?

Can I build my greenhouse using straw bale construction?

Ask about our 5x powerhouse algae growing option.

If you're considering a capital outlay for a (slickly advertised) relatively fragile high crop insurance rate plastic/fiberglass fuel hog low-productivity greenhouse of foreign manufacture, you have a clear option now. A plant-protecting real glass zero-fuel high-productivity sustainable greenhouse will ultimately make you happier.

We've also seen our experimental competitors: plastic Walapini greenhouses, year 2000-vintage roaldgundersen.com triangular greenhouses with fiberglass/plastic fronts and 1970s New Alchemy designs. With each of these options, you're going to have to throw the plastic light-absorbing wall into the landfill sooner or later and you're not going to get about 70% of weak winter sunlight on your crops. Plastic hoop houses are relatively unsustainable and have collapse and puncture issues. Glass greenhouses usually require outside heating.

So, if you want to build your own farmer-buildable greenhouse that costs relatively less to build than almost any other greenhouse, that costs little or nothing to heat, that is sustainable and that delivers great winter plant growth, write us at info@klinkmansolar.com. You'll probably get me, the inventor, visiting your house (yes there are driving expenses, and we're based in Rhode Island).

Our chicken coop greenhouse not only supplies adequate solar heat at night for proper egg laying, but it provides an enormous amount of sunlight. Greens grow on the wall under chicken wire. The chickens eat any parts of the greens that stick up out of the chicken wire. As I've said, we're completely unlike any other greenhouse builder anywhere.

**KSD SOLAR THERMAL HEAT/HOT WATER SYSTEM
One nearly completed system is needing to be moved from its location in Warwick. If you are interested in moving and installing it for your use, or know of someone else who might be interested in the energy production and savings it can supply, check out the information at:
Solar Thermal System Opportunity.doc

This unique system inexpensively stores heat for on-demand heating. We can retrofit most existing buildings. Shown below is a standalone system for an existing Warwick building which supplies summer shade. We discovered that wind load, foundations and aluminum frames for the collectors were more of the cost than the actual heat system. In the near future we want to drop the lifetime cost of perhaps 80% displacement of your home and hot water bills in the Frost Belt toward the $10,000 range plus (your) labor. Again, write us at info@klinkmansolar.com and we'll talk on the phone. We aim for close to zero maintenance, great tolerance of high wind gusts and low lifetime total cost. We expect our next prototype (but not this Warwick prototype) to be in a price range that competes with oil & propane heating costs. We can also handle commercial needs, say, for a laundromat's hot water preheating. You might want to give your customers a refund of a quarter a load on a sunny day because your own profit will go up more than that on a sunny day. We need a tiny sunny field and a fence around the unit. Tell us what you have to work with.

INNOVATION MEETS INTERFAITH!

Our first unique working KSD Solar Heat/Hot Water System is going up at Temple Am-David, a synagogue in Warwick, RI.  The project is an example of interfaith cooperation between people dedicated to sustainability. We are Quakers – our partners in this endeavor include Liz Marsis, RI Interfaith Power & Light; Lee Lerner of Temple Am-David, and a number of helpful professionals, local tradespeople and volunteers including John Cruz of JC Electric.

Our rural heat collector and heat storage system passively collects and stores great amounts of heat. Electricity costs on the storage side of the system are zero and any system with no moving parts can last for many decades. As usual, we don't want to use plastic. Our system is quite buildable by average farmers. At night, a thermostat decides when to apply the heat to an existing chicken coop, to an existing heat-leaking greenhouse system, to a house. Yes, this system has a hot water preheating option. We can scale to all sizes of heating needs. Yes, this heat banking system matches well with a geothermal pump or with a mini-split for unprecedented fossil fuel savings.

** OUR NOTABLY UNIQUE MOUNTAIN SOLAR ELECTRIC SYSTEM (PATENT #8,823,197)

Mountain solar is based on a 600 foot solar updraft chimney prototype erected in Manzanares, Spain. They generated 50 kilowatts every sunny day for seven years.

The beauty of a solar updraft chimney is that it generates steady power with perhaps one moving part, the turbine. Because a chimney runs on warm air, not on incredibly hot substances, almost all of its environmental issues go away and the engineering becomes both cheap and simple.

We have added quite a few innovations to the chimney. First, we can run the chimney diagonally up the side of a 3,000 foot mountain, increasing our power output for the same solar heat field by a factor of five. Second, we expect to generate relatively warm air at an incredibly cheap price, and we can store great amounts of heat for nighttime solar electric generation. We fully expect the price of photovoltaic farms to drop below the 3 cent per kilowatt-hour barrier soon enough. We're going to beat them at night, if not also on sunny afternoons. If you want to actually develop renewable-based power that helps solve the intermittency problem, write us at info@klinkmansolar.com. It's not the climate fight that you dream of fighting, but the one you actually fought that counts.

This 1982 test chimney in Manzanares, Spain was successful in principle (if seriously cost-inefficient), proving that solar chimneys work. I simply want to make them wonderfully cost-efficient.

RELATED -- MOUNTAIN DESALINIZATION

In an older desalinization system, water is boiled and steam is condensed. We put our steam or water vapor through our mountain solar chimney. This process generates electricity from the steam, and then it restores a mountain glacier at the top of a 14,000 foot or taller mountain. We can run on waste steam or water vapor from any other industrial process. We can power a ski area that we also create with snowfall.
